Deer in the Headlights: Too Much, Coming Too Fast

It is such a weird time be alive.  People everywhere are noting the extraordinary times and when I talk to fellow Believers there is a clear recognition that we are living in the end times.  As I read thru Scripture, whether the Old Testament or New Testament there is no doubt in my mind that all the things going on in the world, and particularly in Israel are fulfillment of God’s prophecies…all pointing to the return of Christ.  But the exact timing of Christ’s return remains a mystery, as He said it would.  So in the midst of this “in between” time, with one foot on earth and one in heaven I find myself very reflective

Unexpectedly, with all the world events taking place, I find myself like the deer with headlights in its eyes…paralyzed in my thoughts and a bit overwhelmed by the speed with which our country and world is unraveling.  I am sure it does not help that main source of both news and entertainment is my iphone.   It paradoxically informs me of every suffering and injustice in the world while simultaneously luring me to squander hours of my day watching silly videos to escape the weightiness of these troubling times around me.

The Apostle wrote, “The end of all things is near.  Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled, so that you can pray.”   I Peter 4:7.

It sounds so easy to pray, but it does take some discipline to keep our head clear minded so that  we don’t become overwhelmed with the problems of the day or conversely, so entertained by distractions that we forget to lift up to the Lord those in great need around us.  The most important and consequential action we can take part in is prayer.  May we never take it for granted

The great hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!

Are we weak and heavy-laden? Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee. Thou wilt find a solace there.

Blessed Savior, Thou hast promisedThou wilt all our burdens bear; May we ever, Lord, be bringing All to Thee in earnest prayer. Soon in glory bright, unclouded, There will be no need for prayer—Rapture, praise, and endless worship. Will be our sweet portion there.
