I was reading through Psalm 139 early this morning. I really love that Psalm for many reasons but I am particularly drawn to the language that displays the intricacy of God’s knowledge of us. He uses verbs associated with skills women have had used through the centuries.
David wrote, “Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You HEM me in---behind and before me; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, to lofty for me to attain.” Verses 4-6
When I read this I thought of the fleece blankets I make for my grandkids and family. I try to find fabrics that are in the colors they love and highlight the interests or things that bring them joy. Their blankets in many ways reflect their personalities, but they also reflect how much I love them and know them. It is hard to make something uniquely personal for someone you don’t know.
It is an awesome thought to realize how intricately God knows us. It is both a comfort and concern. It is a relief that God knows my love for Him, but in those moment’s when my thoughts are not charitable towards others, but judgmental or harsh, I would prefer to hide from the Lord. Yet we can never truly hide from God.
”For you created my inmost being; you KNIT me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was WOVEN together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Verses 13-16
How blessed we are to be loved and known by God on the good days and on the bad, because on our worst days, when we fall short of even of our own standards let alone Gods, He creates a path way back to Him, by way of the cross.
“If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins—simply come clean about them—he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing.” I John 1:9 The Message Bible
“Lord may you hem us in this Christmas Season, basking in the love that you showed us on the cross. We don’t deserve it but Jesus we are so grateful that you blanket us in grace. May we do the same for others, clothing them with the same love and mercy you have shown us. We love you. We thank you. In Your Name. Amen.”
