On Stormy Nights

Updated: Feb 22

Do you ever notice that at night your worries seem to grow exponentially? For me as evening grows darker, and I begin to analyze the events of the day my problems seem to become very big…so big in fact that I can’t see Jesus just my enormous problem. The words penned below are so analogous to my gripping fear when my worries become so big and my Jesus so small. Perhaps, you can relate.

"And a fierce windstorm began to blow, and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already being swamped. But Jesus was in the stern, asleep [with His head] on the [sailor’s leather] cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are about to die?” And He got up and [sternly] rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still (muzzled)!” And the wind died down [as if it had grown weary] and there was [at once] a great calm [a perfect peacefulness]. Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith and confidence [in Me]?” They were filled with great fear, and said to each other, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Mark 4:37-31 Amplified Bible

May Jesus remind you and me that He is in the boat with us…no need to panic…no need to worry. He is not alarmed and we don’t need to be either. He isn’t abandoning ship and leaving us all alone. Nope. He is eager to help us and guide us. He will help us get through it. What a comfort!

“Jesus, please help us on those dark nights, when we strain to see you. May you strengthen our faith and confidence in you and may we surrender our desire for control to you. In Jesus Name. Amen.”
